The Feast of Saint Claire in Jerusalem

Along the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, not far from Mount Zion, is situated the monastery of Saint Claire, founded at the end of the 18th century by the French nun Elisabeth of Calvary, and inhabited today by a lively community of 13 cloistered sisters, daughters of Saint Claire of Assisi.

With much emotion, many friends gathered together at the monastery to participate at the celebration for the Feast of Saint Claire, in the year which is also the 8th Centenary of the Order’s foundation: first came the solemn vespers, on the evening of August 10, presided by the Custos, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and then Holy Mass on the morning of August 11, presided by Mons. William Shomali, Auxiliary Bishop of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Everyone was touched by the beauty and intensity of this meeting, of the simplicity of this small world that seeks to witness to the essential reality of the Gospel, a very rich world in this disputed and suffering land.
In front of the precious relic of Saint Claire, gently in prayer, or in the radiant peace of the garden next to the convent and guest house, one can breathe the grace of this presence and the moving awareness that, between these walls is faithfully guarded the memory of a story which occurred precisely in this place and which continues to live in the small church of the Holy Land.

The first disciple of Saint Francis, who on Christmas Eve of the year 1252, had the grace of a mystical vision: she could see from her cell the celebration that took place in the Church. For this reason, she was proclaimed patron of televised communication.
And so from this convent of the Poor Claires in Jerusalem, on the Feast of Saint Claire, patron of television, we dare ask for a special intercession also for us, who try to communicate every day, with TV cameras, all of the beauty and richness of this land of God.
