At Saint Savior, the Bicentenary since the birth of Blessed Mary Catherine Troiani

On Sunday the 27th of January, in Jerusalem’s Saint Savior parish church, the Bicentenary (1813- 2013) for the birth of the Blessed Mother Catherine Troiani, founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CIM) ended.

The 10 a.m. mass presided by the Custos of the Holy Land was concelebrated by the Custodial Vicar, Fr. Artemio Vitores and Fr. Carlos Molinas, the CIM sister’s spiritual assistant, by Fr. Stephane Milovitch, the Bethlehem Guardian and by Father Jihad Shweihat, the Postulator for the beatification cause of Mother Catherine Troiani.

At the high altar, there were the Apostolic Nuncio, Msgr. Giuseppe Lazzarotto, Msgr. Antonio Franco, the Holy Land ambassador and numerous friars and priests who took part in the Eucharist.

The sisters belonging to the religious family, the Custody friars, the Italian General Consul and the Consul from Malta were sitting on the first benches in the church, which was crowded with the faithful.

In the homily, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, through the Mass readings, traced the experiences which were lived by Blessed Mary Catherine Troiani. Starting from the first reading of Nehemiah, the Custos emphasized the importance of God’s revelation, strongly connected to this land. It is not a fairytale, but a true story which is still lived today: the Christian Mission in the Holy Land.

“We are here, we can touch it, in the Holy places, in service of this land’s and community’s’ needs”.

From the Gospel’s reading of Luke, that narrates the Synagogue episode, Fr. Pizzaballa expressed his thought: “The Spirit of God that Jesus gave to us, must make us able to transform the world.”

Mother Catherine’s extraordinary life, full of love towards the poor and people in distress, the little abandoned “morette” (dark skinned girls), is an exemplary witness, a heritage to follow.

“Now it is our turn. That today continues. We all want to be the broken bread, to be in love , looking first of all to Our Lord and mainly, for Him, give ourselves to today’s poor people, here and today, with our lives, we want to say and shout out loud the freedom which is already a reality and we met it: Jesus Christ, our Lord”.

Mother Catherine: “The true daughter of Saint Francis, loved and instilled the love for the Church, not only with words”, as remembered by Sister Rosanna Nava, Provincial mother of the CIM at the end of mass.

Sister Rosanna, thanked the Custody for all that it has, always, done for their order.

At the end of the ceremony in the Curia’s atrium (entrance) a rich reception was offered by the Sisters of the CIM, to which a lunch was offered in the Saint Savior Convent’s refectory, livened by songs and greetings.

Mother Catherine “Missionary in cloister, contemplative in mission”, with this simple expression, Pope John Paul the II underlined the essence of the life of Blessed Mother M. Catherine Troiani, on the 14th of April 1985, the day of her beatification.

So today, these Daughters are called to preach the Gospel with an itinerary and penitent spirit, they are present in the Holy Land Province, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon since 1885, and continue their charitable mission in hospital service, schools, houses for children, the poor and the needy.
