Celebration in Bethlehem of the 10th General Congress of the Legion of Mary

The 10th General Congress of the Legion of Mary in the Holy Land was held on Friday, November 9th, under the title of “Our perseverance toward the future” in the Year of Faith.

H.B., Fuoad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, H.E., Giacinto Boulos Marcuzzo, Auxiliary Bishop and Patriarchal Vicar for Israel, H.E., William Shomali, Auxiliary Bishop and Patriarchal Vicar for Jerusalem and were present for meeting, held at the Bethlehem Hotel.
More than six hundred people participated in the event, including many priests, sisters and members of the organization founded by the Servant of God Frank Duff, attending the various institutes of Jerusalem.

The day began with the recitation of the rosary, led by Fra Feras Hijazin, pastor of the parish Church of St. Saviour, and general director of the movement in the Holy Land. The Patriarch, after the initial greeting, invited all to go more deeply into the documents and messages contained in the Apostolic Exhortation of the Pope, addressed to the Church in the Middle East during the recent Synod; in particular, in his pastoral letter sent to the leaders of the Catholic Church of the Holy Land for the Year of Faith. H.B., Patriarch Twal said that the new evangelization must start from here, this place where the Church began.

Among the many themes developed by the various speakers during the Congress, of particular interest was the intervention given by Fr. Don Luis Hazboun, animator for the Movement, and that given by H.E., Bishop Shomali linking the Eucharist to the history of the Legion of Mary.

The Legion of Mary is an international Catholic movement of lay people who want to collaborate in the mission of evangelization in the Church.

The Servant of God Frank Duff established the Legion in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921. The Legion of Mary is structured like that of an army, adopting military terms, signifying the reality of life as a battle to be fought.

Its members engage in the apostolate, directed to the furthest outreaches of the Church through personal contacts. The spirituality of the Legion of Mary is based primarily on faith in action, in union with the Holy Spirit and with Mary in the work of redemption.

Each day, in many parts of the world, members of the Legion of Mary recite the “Catena Legionis”, a bond uniting them to one another and to their Holy Mother.
